History of Penang

     Penang history was dated back to the 16th century when Portuguese trades in search for spice then founds a small island when they obtaining fresh supplies of water. At that time, Penang was part of state of Kedah and named after a plam tree.



The very first Englishman who discovers Penang was Captain James Lancaster during a trade mission to East India.


The founder of Penang, Captain Francis Lighthoisted the Union Jack officially took possession of the island and renamed it as “Prince of Wales Island” in honour of the heir to the British throne.


Fort Cornwillis was built to defend Penang from any attacks.

       Penang Hill is a hill resort with unpolluted air and historical features, on the northern part of Penang Island which located in Air Itam, 6 kilometers away from Georgetown.

      A Hindu Temple on Penang Hill that known as Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan Temple and a Penang Hill Mosque stands on the other side of hill can also be found in the hilltop.

       Another attraction that attracts a lot of couple, marriage shoot and youngster every year will be a love lock wall at the hilltop, visitor can seal a padlock with own and lover name at the wide fence.

         Penang Street Art is done by a young Lithuania-born artist name Ernest Zacharevic, known as Murals of Georgetown. He has done most of the murals in Penang and mostly focus at Georgetown. Murals of him were ‘Little Children on Bicycle’ and ‘This Old Man’ at Armenia Street, ‘Little Girl in Blue’ at Muntri Street, ‘Boy on a Bike’ at Ah Quee Street and mural beside it was ‘Little Boy with Pet Dinosaur’, ‘Reaching Up’ at Cannon Street, ‘Children in a Boat’ at Chew Jetty and ‘Broken Heart’ at Love Lane, Chulia Street. Besides, there is another famous mural of ‘Children on Swing’ at Step By Step Lane , Chulia Street of other artist name Louis Gan.
